White-Bellied Sea Eagle

06 Aug

White-Bellied Sea Eagle are quite a common sight in Singapore. They are also known as Fish Eagle. Here are two images that merge into one to show the sequence of the raptor coming in and getting its morning breakfast. I decided to blend the two images together using digital imaging method and I guess it blended well in this case.

Most peopleĀ  visit this place for the shorebirds called the Brown Headed Seagull. The months between October and May are the best for birdwatching and it is close to Bangkok where one can make a half day trip by taxi, or make a whole day of it by going to Muang Boran Fish Ponds in the morning and then move on to Bang Poo

Little Grebe

23 Nov

The Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), is small in size and is 23 to 29 cm in length. It is the smallestĀ  of the grebe family of water birds and is commonly found in open ponds.

These Little Gebe was facing extinction in Singapore when the last patch of their habitat wasdue for destruction. It was lucky that somehow a handful of them make it to survive at a disused Singapore Quarry that was converted into a nature reserve.

Singapore Jurong Birdpark

10 Apr

My recent visit to Jurong BirdPark gave me an impression it was not doing well. The main restaurant was closed and even the Weaver Birds at the Waterfall Aviary was caged instead of free ranging within the waterfall areas. Not a very goodsight. Birds are born to be free….not caged.

Marsh Sandpiper at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

06 Nov

During migration period, they can be found with other shore birds at mudflats, estuaries and prawn ponds. As SBWR is a prime site for them, they used to congregate in flocks of a few hundreds. They probes the mud surface frantically for food at low tide for minute invertebrate prey.

During migration, the RedShank frequent prawn farm, mudflats and mangroves edges. They form dense flocks along high tide roosting sites and spread out during low tides. They make a series of loud ringing notes, teu-hoo when taking off. The pictures show some of their recent activities at the wetland SBWR.
